• Do you know how much sugar you eat?
  • Do you know how much you feed your kids?
  • Do you know where it hides?
  • Do you know why you crave it?
  • Do you know why once you start eating it you just can’t stop?

My guess is probably not. In fact, I didn’t know all of the answers to these questions until I started to get really, really curious about sugar and it’s effects and started to do some serious research on it. (Yes, the nerd in me thrives on this stuff!)

This is important. Sit up. It’s time to pay attention.

There’s more and more research coming out that’s making it clear how harmful sugar is in our diet. It’s been scientifically linked to obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heart disease, cancer, depression…the list goes on and on.

And, we’ve been in denial…

If you’re like me, perhaps you went through the 90’s thinking that sugar based food products like candy for instance, could be consumed in vast quantities, because after all it’s “fat free” !

Back then the major theories out there were:

  1. Eating fat is what makes you fat and
  2. Trans-fats are especially harmful.

Thus the war on fat began to help curb our ever increasing overweight population…and the role of sugar and the effect it has on our health and waistline was largely ignored.

How clever of the food companies!

And by food companies, I’m talking about Nestle, Kellogg, General Mills, Nabisco – (companies who create food products that I guarantee you have in your house) who have spent gazillions of dollars researching their products and formulating them in such a way that they reach a BLISS POINT.

“Bliss Point” is the precise amount of sugar or fat or salt in a food that will send you over the moon so that you can keep eating the product. BUT the most powerful of these 3 things is the taste of sugar – in every product a food company creates there’s an optimum concentration of sugar at which the sensory pleasure you experience while eating it is maximal.

And guess what, children have a bliss point that’s almost twice as high as an adults!! AND our bliss point for sugar gets shaped by our earliest experiences with it – so, the more sugar we introduce into our children’s lives, the more they will want it and many of us well-intentioned moms are setting our kids up for a lifelong battle with sugar (and the host of health consequences it’s directly linked to) without even realizing it. Bear Paw anyone?

Why can’t you stop eating it?

It’s not your fault.

Scientists and mathematicians are using high math and complicated computations to create “the biggest crave” response in your brain. Food engineers are optimizing food based on color, smell, packaging, and taste (taste being the optimal level of sweetness).

Howard Moskowitz is a pioneer in this field – he creates new sweetened food products designed to occupy the maximum amount of space in our tummy, he designs them so that we CRAVE them by manipulating the above components. So, we buy them and eat them, and we keep eating them. The level of manipulation is shocking. AND we’re starting to wise up to this!!!

Here’s the deal…

Honestly, we don’t stand a chance…unless we get truly informed about, push back, and start saying NO to sugar. The challenge is that we barely know how to do that – I mean, it’s confusing, right? Sugar has at least 50 different names, labels are confusing to read, and we still need for things to be tasty and convenient.
